Manual Osteopathy in Waterdown, Ontario
Manual osteopathic therapy
Osteopathy is a manual therapy that aims to restore balance in the body by using gentle movements to correct structural and postural imbalances, thus reducing pain and improving function. It involves the use of non-invasive manual therapies that treat and strengthen the musculoskeletal framework, which includes joints, muscles and fascia, as well as the body’s nervous and lymphatic systems.
The primary goal of osteopathic manual therapy is to treat the underlying cause of pain or dysfunction, rather than the symptoms. When the body is out of alignment, restrictions can occur in the soft tissue (fascia and muscles) which can lead to structural dysfunction, such as bony restrictions and asymmetries of the spine and limbs, thereby inhibiting proper function and leading to pain and discomfort.
Through the application of joint mobilizations, soft tissue therapy, and muscle energy techniques, osteopathic manual treatments can help to reduce musculoskeletal pain, correct posture, improve joint mobility and function, and improve circulation, neural, and digestive function. A core principle of osteopathy is that the body works as an integrated unit with self-healing mechanisms that can be mobilized and enhanced using manual osteopathic techniques, resulting in reduced pain and facilitating a state of equilibrium (balance) and optimal function.
What is an osteopathic manual practitioner?
An osteopathic manual practitioner has extensive training in manual osteopathic practice and can assess and treat clients using gentle manual techniques.
Osteopathic manual practitioners do not simply concentrate on treating the problem area, but also use manual techniques to promote balance in all body systems to provide optimal health and wellbeing. Ultimately, there is reduced pain and greater mobility which allows the body to heal itself.
