Osteopathy FAQs in Waterdown & Hamilton, Ontario

What can I expect at my first appointment?

Your first visit begins with a detailed health intake and assessment. During this 60-minute appointment, Mark will ask questions to better understand your health history, current concerns, and goals for treatment.

This is followed by a hands-on assessment, looking at how your body moves and identifying areas of restriction, tension, or imbalance.

At the end of the appointment, you may be given simple exercises or recommendations to support your progress between visits. A follow-up plan will also be discussed based on your specific condition and goals. In many cases, a follow-up appointment is recommended within 1–2 weeks.

Are treatments covered by my health insurance?

Osteopathic services are covered by many extended health benefit plans; however, coverage can vary depending on your provider and individual policy.

It is recommended that you check with your insurance provider prior to booking to confirm whether manual osteopathy is included in your plan.

Do I need a referral from a doctor?

No, a referral from a physician is not required to see a manual osteopathic practitioner.

How many treatments will I need?

This depends on your condition, how long it has been present, and how your body responds to treatment.

Some people experience relief within a few sessions, while more complex or chronic issues may require a longer-term approach. Treatment plans are always individualized and adjusted based on your progress and goals.

What should I wear to my appointment?

Comfortable, loose-fitting clothing is recommended so movement and assessment can be done easily. In some cases, certain areas may need to be accessed directly, but your comfort is always prioritized.

Is osteopathic treatment painful?

Treatment is generally gentle and adapted to your comfort level. Some techniques may create mild discomfort, especially when working through areas of tension or restriction, but this should never feel excessive or overwhelming.

Many patients find treatment relaxing, particularly when addressing nervous system tension.

What types of conditions do you treat?

Osteopathy can help with a wide range of concerns, including:

  • Back and neck pain

  • Headaches and migraines

  • TMJ and jaw pain

  • Chronic pain and tension

  • Digestive issues

  • Pediatric concerns (babies and children)

Treatment is focused on identifying and addressing underlying restrictions that may be contributing to your symptoms.

Can osteopathy help with chronic pain?

Yes — osteopathy can be particularly helpful for chronic or long-standing pain.

Treatment focuses on identifying deeper patterns of restriction within the body, including myofascial tension and nervous system involvement, which are often missed or unresolved with more symptom-based approaches.

Do you treat babies and children?

Yes — osteopathy can be beneficial for infants and children using very gentle, hands-on techniques.

Common reasons parents seek care include feeding difficulties, sleep challenges, tension or asymmetry, and support for early development.

Mark Boutillier practices at Kinstruct Health & Wellness in Waterdown, Ontario with a team of experts including chiropractors and RMTs who have a special focus on restoring the function of myofascia to optimize whole body health.
