Craniosacral Therapy
Craniosacral therapy is a gentle, hands-on approach used within osteopathy that focuses on releasing tension within the body and supporting overall function and regulation.
The craniosacral system refers to the membranes and cerebrospinal fluid that surround and protect the brain and spinal cord. This system extends from the bones of the skull (cranium) down through the spine to the sacrum (the base of the spine), and is closely connected to the nervous system and surrounding connective tissues.
Craniosacral therapy uses very light touch and subtle movements to work with the tissues and structures associated with this system, including the cranial bones, sacrum, and surrounding soft tissues.
In practice, this approach is often incorporated as part of a broader osteopathic treatment, with the goal of reducing tension, improving tissue mobility, and supporting the body’s natural ability to regulate and adapt.
Many of the effects of craniosacral therapy can be understood through its influence on the nervous system and fascial tension patterns, helping the body shift out of a more guarded or stressed state.
Clients often describe a sense of reduced pressure or tension in the head, neck, and back, along with improved relaxation and sleep following treatment.
What Conditions Can Craniosacral Therapy Help?
Craniosacral techniques may be used as part of treatment for:
Chronic neck and back pain
Migraines and headaches
Jaw pain and TMJ dysfunction
Post-concussion symptoms
Fascial tension and restrictions
Neuralgia
Stress-related tension and anxiety
Sleep disturbances
It is often incorporated when a gentler, more subtle approach is appropriate, or when the body is more sensitive or reactive.
A Gentle, Individualized Approach
Not every treatment requires craniosacral techniques. Care is always adapted to your individual needs, and this approach is used when it is felt to be appropriate as part of your overall treatment.
